Let’s see how this works.

I have many old websites and blogs that I have not used in sometime. Here, I will try to publish to each of them with this new software. I will see what works and what works the best. Eventually I will eliminate most of my sites scattered throughout the web, so as to concentrate on only one or two sites. This will be an ongoing test until I decide what software works best and what web hosting (and blog hosting) that I prefer. I will mostly decide what software actually plays best with the various available hosting options.

When you view this clip you'll get a good feel for what happens to an airplane when it hits a concrete wall. The passenger jets that hit the WTC towers and Pentagon were doing 600 mph!!! Many of you may have seen the Michael Mooresque web site that asks the question; 'If it's true that a Boeing airliner hit the Pentagon, what happened to all the parts of it? Why did we not find more pieces of it? Where did all that mass GO?'

Well, for those who question what happened to 'all the mass of that airplane,' watch. It's an Air Force engineering test of a concrete barrier that was to surround a nuclear reactor dome, to see if it would indeed survive an aerial attack. With the high speed cameras rolling, they attached an F-4 Phantom to the sled and then pumped up the speed to 500 MPH, and... "What happens when an 'Unstoppable Force' meets an 'Immovable Object?'" Watch in slow motion as the F-4 turns to vapor.

Everyone who has ever bought a house will enjoy this.

A New Orleans Lawyer sought an FHA loan for a client. He was told the loan would be granted if he could prove satisfactory title to a parcel of property being offered as collateral. The title to the property dated back to 1803, which took the lawyer three months to track down. After sending the information to the FHA, he received the following reply:

(Actual letter): "Upon review of your letter adjoining your client's loan application, we note that the request is supported by an Abstract of Title.

While we compliment the able manner in which you have prepared and presented the application, we must point out that you have only cleared title to the proposed collateral property back to 1803. Before final approval can be accorded, it will be necessary to clear the title back to its origin."

Annoyed, the lawyer responded as follows (actual letter):

"Your letter regarding title in Case No. 189156 has been received. I note that you wish to have title extended further than the 194 years covered by the present application. I was unaware that any educated person in this country, particularly those working in the property area, would not know that Louisiana was purchased, by the US, from France in 1803, the year of origin identified in our application.

For the edification of uninformed FHA bureaucrats, the title to the land prior to US ownership was obtained from France, which had acquired it by Right of Conquest from Spain. The land came into the possession of Spain by Right of Discovery made in the year 1492 by a sea captain named Christopher Columbus, who had been granted the privilege of seeking a new route to India by the Spanish monarch, Isabella.

The good queen, Isabella, being a pious woman and almost as careful about titles as the FHA, took the precaution of securing the blessing of the Pope before she sold her jewels to finance Columbus' expedition.

Now the Pope, as I'm sure you may know, is the emissary of Jesus Christ, the Son of God, and God, it is commonly accepted, created this world. Therefore, I believe it is safe to presume that God also made that part of the world called Louisiana. God, therefore, would be the owner of origin and His origins date back, to before the beginning of time, the world as we know it AND the FHA.

In Observance of Memorial Day

Of all the military bugle calls, none
is so easily recognized or more apt
to render emotion than Taps. Up to
the Civil War, the traditional call at
day's end was a tune, borrowed
from the French, called Lights Out.
In July of 1862, in the aftermath of
the bloody Seven Days battles, hard on the loss of 600 men
and wounded himself, Union General Daniel Adams
Butterfield called the brigade bugler to his tent. He thought
"Lights Out" was too formal and he wished to honor his men.
Oliver Wilcox Norton, the bugler, tells the story, "...showing
me some notes on a staff written in pencil on the back of an
envelope, (he) asked me to sound them on my bugle. I did this
several times, playing the music as written. He changed it
somewhat, lengthening some notes and shortening others, but
retaining the melody as he first gave it to me. After getting it to
his satisfaction, he directed me to sound that call for Taps
thereafter in place of the regulation call. The music was beautiful
on that still summer night and was heard far beyond the
limits of our Brigade. The next day I was visited by several
buglers from neighboring Brigades, asking for copies of the
music which I gladly furnished. The call was gradually taken
up through the Army of the Potomac."
This more emotive and powerful Taps was soon adopted
throughout the military. In 1874 It was officially recognized by
the U.S. Army. It became standard at military funeral ceremonies
in 1891. There is something singularly beautiful and appropriate
in the music of this wonderful call. Its strains are
melancholy, yet full of rest and peace. Its echoes linger in the
heart long after its tones have ceased to vibrate in the air.

Now, I thought this was interesting. What this photo shows is actually pudding. Yes, edible pudding. Under all that dirt, which is actually crushed Oreo Cookies, is a type of pudding concoction. The colorful things you see sticking out of the dirt are worms - edible gummy worms. I have seen this dish prepared before but, this little extra makes it kind of cute (issh what am I doing - I hate that word). The extras are the worms and the clever use of the toy wheelbarrow. I've only seen the dessert made in a regular bowl and no worms added. What a neat extra touch. It's kinda cute, I mean neat.

Spring or Not?

Is it spring yet? In my part of the world we generally get excited when we see the first Robin in our yard. To us this usually denotes the yearly genesis of spring. Well, I have seen my first Robin today only about an hour ago. Yet, I contrast that against my workday and I become confused (some say this comes quite easily for me). In all my journeys this winter I have not gotten my vehicle stuck even once. Until today that is. With the nasty weather we received last night and this morning I was able to get my truck stuck not once but three times! So, please tell me . . . is this spring or not? Ah, I guess I should not complain too loudly as I hear they received 27 inches of the cold powder just one hour to the north of me. 'Slurp.' Ah, this hot coffee sure is good. 'Slurp'. Maybe time to pour another. 'Slurp'.

Now that I think of it, I've seen ducks sitting motionless on ice covered lakes, the last two weekends in eastern North Dakota. They were probably thinking they were a little too early. I wish I could have photographed them because it was striking to see them in this predicament.

Sony has just announced two new alpha-mount zoom lenses.

One is the Carl Zeiss Vario Sonnar T* 24-70mm f/2.8 ZA. which should be perfect for landscape and portrait photography. It is said that this lens exhibits excellent contrast and center-to-edge resolution. Really appealing is the fact that it's f/2.8 aperture will remain constant throughout it's focal length. Also, this lens is the only compatible large aperture standard zoom with the benefit of image stabilization available in the industry.

The other lens is a 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6 which should be ideal for ideal for sports and portrait photography. The lens offers superb contrast and sharpness across its focal length range. It is said to maintain excellent optical characteristics from center to it's periphery.

By the time we were teenagers,

she could read our minds

and had eyes in the back of her head.

Then, life was really tough!

Mother wouldn't let our friends

just honk the horn when they drove up.

They had to come up to the door
so she could meet them.

While everyon else could
date when they were 12 or 13,

we had to wait until we were 16 .

Because of our mother

we missed out

on lots of things other kids experienced.

None of us have ever

Sony Alpha DSLR-A700 Review

Overall conclusion

The Alpha 700 was introduced as a complementary model to the Alpha 100; aimed more at the serious amateur and semi-professional photographer it enters a segment of the market which is buzzing with new models (EOS 40D, D300 and E-3). The A700 clearly has a lot of Minolta DNA (it's a natural successor to the popular Maxxum 7D) but also exhibits a range of development which can be attributed to the new development team that has come out of Sony's purchase of the Konica Minolta DSLR division.

Konica Minolta were the first manufacturer to put a sensor-shift Anti-Shake system into a digital SLR (again, in the 7D which shipped in early 2005), this same feature graces the A700 but has now been renamed 'Super SteadyShot', refined possibly since then but it works in exactly the same way. In our tests it worked well enough to make a difference providing somewhere between 1.0 and 1.5 stops of 'improvement' which it has to be said is somewhat less than Sony's claims.

One thing that is clear when you start shooting with the A700 is that Sony has worked hard on performance; it feels very responsive, button presses for menus or image playback occurring instantly and there's no feeling of lag when changing settings. Other performance criteria such as continuous shooting speed, buffering and write speeds were all very good, with a pretty blazing 34 MB/sec write speed with SanDisk Extreme IV cards. I should also make special mention of that new high resolution LCD monitor which really does make a difference to the whole shoot & review experience.

My primary gripes were around a couple of questionable decisions; firstly that RAW files already have noise reduction applied to them, this in effect means that the photographer can't treat RAW as the 'digital negative'. This subsequently removes the ability to successfully apply any third party noise reduction method (either now or in the future) or to make his or her own decisions about the balance between noise and NR. I understand that this is because a certain amount of noise reduction occurs very early in the image pipeline (at or around the sensor) but why that can't be simply disabled by choice is a curious to say the least.

The second oddity is the fact that this camera's base sensitivity appears to be ISO 200 (not ISO 100), subtly hinted by the fact that the Auto ISO range begins at 200 and supported by our own dynamic range tests. Sony managed to indicated that ISO sensitivities above 3200 were 'out of calibration' but not those below 200 (the trade-off below this point is highlight dynamic range). This gives rise to the rather ridiculous situation where most users (who try to stick to the lowest ISO wherever possible) will not only be shooting at a setting that doesn't produce the optimum image quality, but also losing a valuable stop of sensitivity at the same time.

With the gripes out of the way I have to say that overall image quality was very good, with the A700 producing as much resolution / detail as the competition at lower sensitivities and noise reduction keeping noise levels in check at higher sensitivities without losing too much detail (although we personally would prefer less luminance reduction and more chroma reduction, which is Nikon's approach). Color was predictable and neutral and tonal response was good without ever being over contrasty (nice roll-off in highlights from ISO 200 upwards).

Overall then the A700 is a good performer with good overall image quality with a nice range of features - even if on the negative side there are some quirky design decisions which may or may not affect you. Best of all though is the fact that it weighs in at the lower end of the price band for this category of DSLR, that makes it about $400 less than the Nikon D300 and $300 less than the Olympus E-3.

Web Hoax Victim's Family Seeks Reforms

An Internet hoax that ended with the suicide of a 13-year-old has led to calls from her family for better protections against online harassment, though any solution may run afoul of the First Amendment.

Megan Meier, 13, hanged herself Oct. 16, 2006, just minutes after receiving mean messages on the social networking Web site MySpace. She died the next day.

Megan's parents learned about six weeks after her death that their daughter, who thought she was communicating online with a 16-year-old boy, was being deceived. The boy was created by a mother down the street who wanted to know what Megan was saying about her own daughter, who had had a falling out with Megan.

Lt. Craig McGuire of the St. Charles County Sheriff's Department said authorities could not find a crime to charge anyone with in Megan's case.

"How do you legislate bad behavior?" he asked.

Megan's family wants reforms that would make it illegal for adults to misrepresent themselves to children online and make it illegal to harass or bully online.

Aldermen in Dardenne Prairie, the Meiers' hometown of about 7,000 residents about 35 miles from St. Louis, have proposed a new ordinance related to child endangerment and Internet harassment. And Republican Rep. Cynthia Davis, a state lawmaker who represents the area, said she is trying to see if existing Missouri laws can be improved.

But, she noted, any legal reforms must protect freedom of speech rights. And federal reform might be more appropriate since someone from outside the state could interact with Missouri children online, she said.

Even so, it's hard to know what would work as a response to Megan's situation, Davis said. "This girl was not threatened on the Internet. Somebody said some things that were extremely horrid," she said.

What happened to Megan isn't just awful, it ought to be criminal, her mother, Tina Meier, said Monday.

"You cannot, absolutely cannot, as an adult, pose as a 16-year-old boy on a computer and play games with someone," Meier, 37, told The Associated Press.

"If there's not a law out there to punish someone for that, that's despicable," she said.

Tina Meier, who acknowledges she let her daughter open a MySpace account before she was 14 as the Web site requires, said she monitored her daughter's activities, logging on for her daughter and using software that was designed to capture Megan's communications online.

MySpace did not comment specifically on Meier's case, but an employee said the site does have information about keeping teens safe online, with guidelines for what people can do if they feel they are being bullied.

Meier said more needs to be done to protect children.

"We want the law to change so this doesn't happen again," she said.

My question is this - what is an adult doing on MySpace playing games like this. Perhaps her mental and/or emotional development is equivalent to these early-teen children she is playing mental games with. I guess some adults never grow up. Some parents don't know the difference between supervising their children's activity during their growing years and meddling or living their lives for them, or even sometimes through them. This woman now has to live with the consequences of her actions and with her arrested mental development I hope she can handle it.

In the end, my prayers go out to the Meier family.

Well, I'm finally back.

First, let me apologize. In my hurry to get out the door to my annual hunting retreat, I neglected to place a post announcing the same. It was a very, harried evening when I took off to the hunting shack and I was in great fear of leaving an essential piece of equipment behind (I know - excuses, excuses). I am sorry for not posting that I would be away for a while. Anyway, all is well now and I shall resume my blogging habits, for better or worse.

I have noticed that, well I was gone, Sunni Kay has tagged me with a meme. Sorry Sunn i, as much time has elapsed since you tagged me. I do not know what kind of time restrictions there are on such things, as I HAVE NEVER BEEN TAGGED BEFORE. I will check your site and see what this is about. If it is not too late I will possibly play this meme, otherwise thanks for the tag anyhow.

I must check out Sunni's site now and see what's up. I must, also, check out the other typical blog reads that I have not read in my absence. I must, also, check out a ton of email that didn't seem to mind that I was gone hunting. Then it's back to posting here, as time allows (my work schedule is getting real hectic) and the mood strikes. Wow, what a thing to come back to after vacation - things at work are getting extremely chaotic. I think I need another vacation!

Sony has released an updated firmware for the DSLR-A700 camera, as well as updates for the Image Data Converter and Image Data Lightbox bundled software applications.

The camera firmware update improves image sharpness and reduces noise under certain circumstances. It also improves flash control at very short distances with non-ADI control lenses. The updates for the bundled software applications correct the functioning of such features as image display and file type indication. These updates relate only to early production Firmware �Ver.1� models, which were manufactured through early October. Firmware �Ver.2� models (press Menu & Display together to check) already include this upgrade. Although these improvements are subtle, it is recommended that customers make the update to improve the camera and application software performance.
